Find and Edit Registry Keys with RegScanner

regscanner_cropped.jpgWindows only: RegScanner, a free Windows utility, makes it easier to find registry keys and make quick edits to them. We've offered up a fair share of registry hacks over the years, and many of them, if you used Windows' built-in regedit tool, require browsing through a lot of directory trees to get to the right key. RegScanner offers more advanced search features (inside strings, by date modified, and more), but the real value is in a menu function—"Open Clipboard Text in Regedit." Simply copy the long key name from a how-to site or elsewhere, open RegScanner, and this function will lead you right to the key. That alone is pretty helpful, but the additional tweaks and settings you might find make it a nifty tool. RegScanner is a free download for Windows systems only.

Registry -for Beginners

What is the PC Registry?

Every PC using Microsoft Windows has a registry file. It is one of the most important files on your PC and holds a wealth of information about your computer and the programs that are installed on it. The more programs you install the larger the registry becomes. Unfortunately, when you uninstall programs not all the information in the registry is always removed and files may get left behind or worse still the registry becomes full of information about programs that no longer exist on your computer. In due course this information will begin to dramatically slow your PC down as it has to keep referring to the registry file in order to locate program files and the many files associated with each of these programs. Within just a month or two of buying a new PC, it may begin to slow down dramatically as the PC struggles to locate the correct information. The more programs you install and remove, the worse the problem becomes. In some cases, especially after a PC crash or unexpected re-boot, the registry can actually become corrupted and a re-install of the software may be the only solution.
To get into registry -
step :- Click Start -> Run -> type " regedit" (without quotes)..

Windows XP -RESTARTING

Windows XP, by default, is set to restart when a `stop error' occurs. In earlier Windows versions, it would display a blue screen displaying the error which has caused the problem. In XP, this screen will appear and immediately restart the computer.
To switch off this `auto restart' option, please do the following: Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties. On the Advanced tab, click Settings under Startup and Recovery. Click to clear the Automatically restart check box under System failure, and then click OK.
Now this would not actually solve your problem, but you will at least get the blue screen which will give you some hint on what is causing the problem.
Most probably it could be an ACPI (Advanced Configuration and Power Interface) related problem. You will have to update your BIOS to the latest. Microsoft has provided a solution to solve this problem. Please refer to the URL:
